This map shows the shocking change that took place in Edgewood following the annexation of Campbell Ranch into the Town of Edgewood back in December of 2001.  The area shaded in light yellow represents the boundaries of the Town of Edgewood as they presently exist.  The boundary begins near the bottom of the map at the Torrance County line and runs north and west all the way into southeastern Sandoval County along North 14.

Prior to incorporation in 1999, Edgewood existed as an unincorporated traditional community within the boundaries of Santa Fe County.  A traditional community was what the County government recognized as a homogeneous area with a gathering of homes and businesses that shared a common space and interests within a given area of the County.

In Edgewood that traditional community was anchored by the Intersection of Interstate 40 and New Mexico State Road 344(shown on the map inside the purple lines).  It ran along a north/south spine created by State Road 344 north of Old 66 and County Road 7 south of Old 66.  It began at the Torrance County line in the south and ran north for five miles to Hill Ranch Road at its northern end.  From the 344/County Road 7 spine, the traditional community limits ran two miles east to Williams Ranch Road, and further north where it transitioned to Mosely Road and intercepted East Hill Ranch Road.

West of 344/County Road 7, the area went two miles west to the western boundary of Section 32 at the southern end, and north to Sunset Blvd. on West Dinkle Road.  It jogged east from Sunset Blvd. one mile to Horton Road where it turned north for two miles where it intercepted West Hill Ranch Road.  The total area in this traditional community area involved approximately 17 sections of land or 17 square miles.

The other shared characteristic of this traditional community was that it was also the primary service area of the Edgewood Water company which was later sold to American Water Company which in turn was later sold to EPCOR, the Canadian multi-national Corporation whose only shareholder is the city of Edmonton, in Alberta, Canada.
